OVERVIEW AND BENEFITS

The burden of illness associated with overweight and obesity in the United States and the rest of the world has become an issue of growing concern to the medical and public health communities. In recognition of this important challenge to medical education, experts in medicine, medical education, and public health communities with expertise in mental health, nutrition, physical activity, and a variety of medical specialties including bariatric surgery, internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, and preventive medicine were convened. They developed this report with recommendations regarding the learning objectives and educational experiences needed in medical school curricula to help better address overweight and obesity prevention and treatment. The report also identifies the barriers to implementing effective curricula, implementation strategies, and examples of innovative curricular approaches.
