Implementing Curricular and Institutional Climate Changes to Improve Health Care for Individuals Who are LGBT, Gender Nonconforming, or Born with DSD: A Resource for Medical Educators

Health care disparities continue to be experienced by people who are LGBT, gender nonconforming, and/or are born with differences in sex development (DSD). To reduce these disparities, all health care providers must learn to address the specific health care needs of these populations, and health care institutions must promote a climate that supports, values, and includes individuals in these populations.

This groundbreaking publication assists institutions in implementing curricular and climate changes in medical educational institutions or programs. We believe this publication will equip health care-related educational institutions to make substantial strides paralleling the national movement toward equality for all people.

DESIGNED FOR

Designed for anyone who wants to become more familiar with medical education and desires to use medical school curricula and climate to address the health disparities and health care issues faced by people who are LGBT, gender nonconforming, or born with DSD.

OVERVIEW AND BENEFITS

People who are LGBT, gender nonconforming, or born with differences in sex development (DSD) continue to experience health care disparities. To reduce these disparities, health care providers must address the specific health care needs of these populations, and health care institutions must support, value, and include people in these populations.

No standardized set of competencies exists for medical education to address the health of people who are or may be LGBT, gender nonconforming, or born with DSD. Therefore, even the most progressive institutions have lacked a guide to direct curricular and institutional climate changes specific to these populations. Written by the AAMC’s Advisory Committee on Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Sex Development, this groundbreaking publication fills that gap. It is based on solid educational and assessment practices and theories. It will equip health care-related educational institutions to make substantial strides paralleling the national movement toward equality for all people by:

  • Providing education about the health needs of people who are LGBT, gender nonconforming, or born with DSD and the role of academic medicine and the health care system in supporting these populations.
  • Supporting medical schools to integrate this content into medical education, with a focus on the role of institutional climates.
  • Providing a framework to facilitate the assessment of learners, curricula, and institutions.
  • Highlighting national resources and curricular innovations within academic medicine.
