DESIGNED FOR
This publication is designed for the medical education community.
OVERVIEW AND BENEFITS
This Medical Students with Disabilities: A Generation of Practice publication replaces the prior AAMC publication on this subject, The Disabled Student in Medical School: An Overview of Legal Requirements, which was written in 1993 to help medical schools understand and comply with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990. Since 1993, numerous court cases applying Section 504 and the ADA in the testing, licensure, and educational environments, including medical and other health professional schools, have been decided. In this document, the authors provide to medical schools an overview of the state of the law today. The guidance provided in this document should provide the reader with a general sense of how to work through the challenging application of Section 504 and the ADA in the context of undergraduate medical education.
