OVERVIEW AND BENEFITS

This report containing recommendations from an expert panel on flexibility within professions. It identifies and explains desired principles of interprofessional competencies, including patient/family centered service and the ability to integrate across the learning continuum. It also addresses interprofessional competencies related to relationship, patient/family, and community/population.

Competencies should remain general in nature and yet function as guidelines to allow more flexibility within the professions. An expert panel recommends that both faculty and administrators access, share, and build on these guidelines to develop their own program of study for their institution to align better with general interprofessional competency statements.

The desired principles of interprofessional competencies include:

  • Patient/family centered
  • Community/population oriented
  • Relationship focused
  • Process oriented
  • Linked to learning activities, educational strategies, and behavioral assessments
  • Ability to integrate across the learning continuum
  • Sensitive to the system context/applicable across practice settings
