OVERVIEW AND BENEFITS

This study provides insight into the career paths of graduates who have chosen to pursue a dual MD-PhD degree from a training program. It assesses whether MD-PhD programs are collectively training a diverse cohort of men and women who can combine their clinical perspectives with high-quality research over a broad spectrum of disciplines.

Results are based on a study of the graduates of 80 MD-PhD programs. Information from 6,786 survey respondents were combined with data for all MD-PhD program alumni from several AAMC databases. This publication highlights key outcomes like these for MD-PhD program alumni:

• Most (almost 80%) of MD-PhD program alumni survey respondents are following career paths consistent with the goals of their training.
• More than 75% of survey respondents indicated they are performing research. 
• The number of MD-PhD program graduates has increased but remains at around half of projected physician-scientist workforce needs.
• Trainee diversity is increasing slowly.
